An ecosystem designed around the collaboration of creatives, ninetytwo13 is a unique space combining work, life and inspiration on the streets of Akasaka, Tokyo.
Given an opportunity to redevelop a building in the heart of Tokyo, the Tokyo Chapter team had no decisive grand visions, but were intent on creating a space that was both useful and, most importantly, meaningful. The focus on creating an ecosystem to support a community drove the project — and it combines work, life and play in a contemporary setting.
The location is hard to beat, with the busy Tokyo Midtown complex and the quiet retreat of Hinokicho Park only a few steps away. This combination of productivity, vibrancy and natural development has been encapsulated in the project as it seeks to become an organic space of work and inspiration in equal measure.
Confident in their vision, the Tokyo Chapter team worked hard to turn this into a physical space, stripping the building back to its bare bones but maintaining some of the original character. Scouring the world for inspiration, the team studied the rustic towns of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains and Nagano’s forgotten hillside villages all to craft the perfect design. The preserved features were combined with reclaimed items from around the world, incorporated into the design to inspire anyone who entered. As the practical side was slowly completed, from plumbing to structural work, the space took shape and began to reflect the visions of its creators. Working within a tight budget, they had to economise, but the challenge didn’t deter them.
Today, the building is still being adapted and changed — with plans for a roof area in production and new design features added often. Similar to a natural environment, growth and development seem to be a permanent feature for ninetytwo13. Rather than sticking to fixed offices, the ever-changing inhabitants of the co-working spaces and share-house residents ensure there is always a fresh mix of collaborators and creators.
Housed alongside the workspaces, offices and living quarters, the space has a gallery and rooftop as well as future plans for a retail unit and more. The Tokyo Chapter team envisioned a mix of people from different backgrounds — to foster interactions, idea exchanges and inspirations that otherwise may never have happened. The focus on a collaborative community is what drives the team and maintains its focus on the area as an ecosystem — ever developing and changing to incorporate new inhabitants and experiences.
The gallery and rooftop is host to exhibitions and photoshoots as well as events and lectures, all adding to the creative atmosphere. Whether you’re working in its relaxed spaces or attending an event, the bold designs will impress and surprise, with unusual combinations inspiring unusual thoughts.
Although they have no immediate plans for new developments and are focusing on cultivating ninetytwo13, the team are open to new opportunities, so you may have to watch this space.
