Daikanyama's Hillside Terrace celebrates its 50th birthday this year.
Daikanyama landmark Hillside Terrace is celebrating 50 years of retail, commercial and residential service this year.
Designed by award-winning architect Fumihiko Maki, the versatile complex was constructed over several stages, starting in 1969 and finishing in 1992.
Built to reflect the themes of sophistication and well-being, Hillside Terrace offers a selection of cafes, restaurants, fashion boutiques and exhibition galleries, in a relaxing and very pleasant green surrounding.
The site was originally part of a large estate that belonged to Asakura family, whose home still sits at the rear of Hillside Terrace and is open to the public.
Building D of the complex contains leasehold-type condos that were sold by the Asakura family's real estate company in the 1970s to help fund the development.
The land remains under the ownership of the family, with the properties seldom offered for sale.
