From the Edo to the Meiji Period to today, Keisuke Hanaoka from RISE Corp tells REthink Tokyo about the history and real estate within Akasaka in Tokyo's Minato ward
The residential district of Akasaka in the Minato ward was, during the Edo period, near the Edo castle, or what is now Tokyo Imperial Palace. The area once housed samurai residences, including the residence of the Kishu Tokugawa family (Current Akasaka imperial palace), and the residence of the Sanada family (Current American Embassy Dormitory).
At the beginning of the Meiji Period, Akasaka was bustling due to its proximity to Nagatachō, where the National Diet Building was completed in 1936. Akasaka is also home to Tokyo Midtown, the site of the famous Ritz-Carlton Hotel and the Akasaka Sacas commercial complex.
"Akasaka has become an area attracting younger generations and tourists not only office workers," Keisuke Hanaoka from RISE Corp tells REthink Tokyo.

"There are two big redevelopment projects currently underway in Akasaka.
"They include the rebuilding of two International Shin-Akasaka buildings in front of Akasaka station. Announced in January, the project is expected to be completed in about ten years. The nearby Akasaka Sacas building is part of the redevelopment project, which aims to make an entertainment city where media and real urban space merge”. The rebuilding project will be processed following the conclusion of a business agreement with TBS, according to a MEC news release.

"Another project, 'Akasaka 2-chome', is scheduled to be completed in 2024. This will involve developing historical and cultural facilities to cater to foreign visitors to the Akasaka area. Akasaka has many points of interest that convey the Edo culture to international guests," says Hanaoka.
"The neighbouring areas of Roppongi and Toranomon are also home to major redevelopment projects, allowing Akasaka to evolve into a more exciting and welcoming place.
Akasaka is known for being an important commercial precinct, as well as a high-class residential area, forming 3A with Aoyama and Azabu."
