Mount Fuji Architecture brings social hub aesthetic to Shibuya with Trunk (Hotel) thanks to creative director Hiroe Tanaka and Jamo Associates.
With a focus to draw the community in, Mount Fuji Architect designed Trunk (Hotel) features a two-building complex constructed from recycled timbers and stone, with greenery overflowing from its tiered balconies.
The interior, designed by Jamo Associates, placed significant focus on upcycling wood so that the hotel's timber features held an authentic and communal history. While the exterior called on inspiration from Shibuya's geographical features with its use of horizontal and geometric lines.

Before Trunk (Hotel) the concept of boutique hotels was relatively new to Japan, with the majority of accommodation targeted towards luxury or business. And for the team behind Trunk, creating a new type of hotel for Japan was paramount.
Under Mount Fuji Architects, Trunk (Hotel)'s creative director Hiroe Tanaka, wanted to create a new type of hotel that was accessible to everyone, and that would attract a diverse range of local and international guests.

With a foundational concept of "socialising" embedded into the design, Trunk (Hotel) is the transmission point of a new style of social contribution, focusing on five elements that ground it as a social hub within Shibuya. Environment, Local First, Diversity, Health and Culture offering guests and the wider community the opportunity to "help others and society."
At the forefront of this socialising concept, Trunk (Hotel) won the New Concept of the Year Special Award and placed fourth overall at the AHEAD Asia 2018 Hospitality Awards earlier this year.
