According to recent data released by the Japan Tourism Agency.
On January 21st, the Japan Tourism Agency released October and November of 2021 data as submitted by daily stay (Minpaku in Japanese) operators.
15,536 reports were submitted from operators as of January 17th of 2021, for a reporting rate of 83.0% of Japan’s total operator amount as approved by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism as well as the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
On a nationwide basis, the total number of daily stays in Japan was 101,209, up 7.5% year on year (YoY), with 6.5 days per reported residence for the October and November time frame.
By prefecture, Tokyo had the highest number of daily stays at 39,489 nights, followed by Hokkaido (8,331 nights) and Okinawa (6,854 nights).
The total number of daily stay guests nationwide was 125,915 (up 24.0% YoY), or 8.1 people per reported residence for the time frame.
By prefecture, Tokyo had the highest number of guests with 24,355, followed by Hokkaido (8,308 guests) and Tochigi Prefecture (8,222 guests).
Among the nationalities of the guests, 118,961 (94.5%) were Japanese nationals and 6,954 (5.5%) were foreign nationals. The report didn’t say but most likely these are foreigners already living in Japan and not tourists.
Looking at foreign guests by nationality, the Americans ranked first (2,820, 40.6% of total), Chinese second (1,219, 17.5% of total), the British third (303, 4.4% of total), South Korean fourth (266, 3.8% of total), and Vietnamese fifth (189, 2.7% of total).
The top five countries/regions accounted for 69.1% of the total number of foreign guests.
