The earthquakes Japan has experienced means it is not uncommon for properties in Tokyo to feature design aspects made to withstand tremors.
While natural disasters are, by definition, unavoidable, there are ways to prepare for phenomenums such as earthquakes, starting with where you live.
REThink Tokyo talked to PLAZA HOMES about what buyers and renters should look for in relation to earthquake-resistant properties.
Seismic isolation
Seismic Isolation Structure works by stopping the motion generated by earthquakes from reaching the building. This is done by inserting isolators, such as laminated rubber, into the foundation of the building. This form of earthquake resistance is capable of reducing the impact of an earthquake on a building to as little as 1/3 to 1/5 (less than half) of what other earthquake resistant structures will experience.
Damping structure
Damping Structure is a type of earthquake reinforcement that reduces the impact of motion from an earthquake by using damping walls to absorb seismic energy. This type of structure reduces seismic response by 70-80 per cent more than what other earthquake resistant structures are capable of.
2 x 4 structure
With regard to wooden structures, buildings framed with 2x4’s and 2x6’s tend to be more resistant against earthquakes when compared to timber-framed structures. These structures are able to disperse their loads upon receiving seismic motions.

Earthquake resistance reinforcement
Some structures under the former earthquake resistance standards prior to 1981 have been modified with earthquake proof reinforcements to satisfy new earthquake resistance standards. Ways in which their earthquake resistance has been improved may include reinforcing the foundation, fixing the junctions, adding shear walls, reducing the weight of the roof, and more.
Disaster management
Some properties have taken precautions against the loss of lifeline utilities in the event of a disaster. Precautions taken include; storing emergency provisions (food, blankets, and more); having a private electric generator; and/or having a water well on the premises.
